On the 26th January 1986, Kampala became the last stand to fall to the National Resistance Army (NRA) freedom fighters led by Gen Yoweri Museveni. The group that had been wedging a five-year protracted war against regimes then, were welcomed to the city by wanainchi, who were totally fed up with the past military dictatorships. In his swearing speech at the parliament premises in Kampala, the youthful President Museveni made the historic statement thus: "This is not a mere change of guards; it is a fundamental change."
